Qualifications: WSET Level 2 Wine Certification WSET Level 2 Spirit Certification I am the Global Sensory Manager from China, responsible for the Chinese market. My educational background is in Materials Science and Engineering. Prior to my role at FlavorActiV, I served as a raw material inspector in breweries and beverage companies, and also functioned as a trainer for a duration of four years. Since joining FlavorActiV in 2014, I have conducted numerous sensory training courses. My passion for sensory evaluation has led me to achieve the WSET Level 2 Wine Certification and undertake a Brewing course at Dumens Asia. Furthermore, in 2023, I successfully obtained the WSET Level 2 Spirit Certification. What's a common myth or misconception about sensory science you'd love to bust?
Sensory evaluation is just tasting some basic flavors, or that one person with strong tasting ability can represent everyone's opinion, this is not true.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I wish I had the superpower of teleportation, because I love drinking beer and exploring beers from all around the world. If I could teleport, I would be able to travel to different places every day to enjoy beer.

Leandro Fedele is a Sensory Specialist with over 10 years in the food and beverage industry, focusing on the field since 2017. Passionate about food and beverage sensory since 2003, he is a Coffee Specialist with multiple Specialty Coffee Association and other certifications and has recently begun wine studies with WSET. He has worked with breweries across the Americas and the EMEA region, supporting sensory panels, freshness, and bitterness projects. Leandro also teaches Beer Sensory in the Postgraduate Beer Sommelier programme at the Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Politécnico do Porto.

Now, I bring my passion for sensory excellence to this dynamic and global role. Besides brewing, I like to find joy in life's simple pleasures. What's the most interesting or rewarding challenge you've worked on?
I prefer creating custom solutions over just using standard options. Sitting down to build exactly what is needed is highly rewarding. Recently for a company, that meant designing a complex sensory audit for multi matrix panelists. I also bring that problem solving into my own personal projects, like creating custom water profiles for extracting and tasting the flavours I really like to taste.
If you could eliminate one off-flavour from the world forever, what would it be?
Metallic. It really makes me nauseous.
What's your favourite smell?
That's very difficult to answer. But I like floral, fruity and earthy/herbal notes. Floral I like violets and magnolias. Fruity I like mango, passion fruit and raspberries. Earthy and herbal notes I'm all for rosemary, sandalwood and moss. Those are in top of my head.
What excited you most about your role at FlavorActiV?
Meeting new people and helping them reach their sensory goals. It might sound a bit cheesy, but getting to work directly with customers and tailoring our support to exactly what they need is easily the best part of my role.

Common misconception I would say is just because,I drink a certain beverage or eat certain foods does not make us an expert. Sensory is beyond all expectations. I can visit very beautiful places and travel as I love to travel. also meeting new people and engaging them in conversations is definitely very exciting in this role.
What's the most interesting place you've ever visited?
In India -It is DAMAN which has a Black sand Beach which gave me goose bumps and also UGANDA-To have visited the source of the River NILE. Amazing to see the river is the child of the Lake !!!

Which Sector do you most enjoy working in and why?
I don't have strong preferences for working with any particular beverage or food product — I find that all of them share a common sensory basics, while each has its own unique characteristics. What I really enjoy is the opportunity to analyze and compare them.
What's the most interesting or rewarding challenge you've worked on?
One of the most rewarding challenges for me is watching how tasters grow during sensory training — seeing someone who initially struggled to detect aromas and flavors transform into a true tasting expert.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
If I had a superpower, I'd travel through time. If you could travel through time, you wouldn't just see history—you'd taste it, smell it, hear it, and feel it.

I am not sure about myth or misconception, however, from my experience I freely can say, not everyone realise the meaning of sensory analysis, they think it is just tasting smelling and easy to do.. while it is a real serious analysis where you need to have calibrated tasters, I like use terminology "calibrated" which highlights importance of being trained

FlavorActiV gave me chance to engage with and collaborate closely alongside with people from across the globe. Through these interactions, I have been able to gain meaningful insight into a wide range of cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking, enriching both my professional and personal outlook. However, despite geographical distances and cultural differences, the world is remarkably small and unified

It is Indole- Some taster feel flavours and some Sweat, and some even blind, the funniest flavour

I enjoy working in the Food and Beverages sector because food is an essential part of everyday life and has the unique ability to bring joy and satisfaction to people. Being part of an industry that directly impacts customers’ experiences and happiness is very fulfilling to me. A common misconception is that product experience is only about taste. In reality, it’s a multisensory experience involving all five senses—smell, sight, touch, and sound all play a role in how consumers perceive and enjoy a product.

The myth that experts have better senses, when in reality they have more training, vocabulary, and sensory memory.

For obvious reasons, butyric would be a good off-flavour to eliminate from Earth once and for all
What excites you the most about your role at FlavorActiV?
The opportunity to be part of the FlavorActiV team motivates me greatly because of all the challenges involved and the constant opportunity to learn new things and meet new people.
What's somethng people might be surprised to learn about you?
I have a degree in Geophysics, which has very little to do with the field I work in today, and it’s also a rather unconventional background. Everyone imagines a geophysicist as a somewhat crazy scientist.

Being part of a sensory panel is an easy task, in fact it requires a lot of concentration to evaluate products in a most careful and objective way.
What's one flavour that alays sparks debate in sensory trainings?
Lightstruck which is the result of natural light or artificial light on beer packaged in green or transparent is normally very well recognised and picked up in Europe but can be difficult to identify in countries where the sun shines ; in some African countries it is part of the local flavours!
What's the most interesting place you've ever visited?
I had the occasion to travel to many countries and cities around the world that I found beautiful such as Vancouver, Sydney or fascinating such as Moscow, Tokyo or Jerusalem. Vietnam was most fascinating in Asia with its colonial French influence in architecture; you can also find that its fragrant food is accompanied with a "French Baguette".

I have over 13 years of experience as sensory trainer in food and beverage, and have delivered various sensory training courses and sensory projects. Dr Boris Gadzov has been FlavorActiV Director of Global Sensory Management since 2009. Boris began as a Global Sensory Manager, professional trainer and adviser in brand equity, product quality, insight/innovation and taster management. Boris has visited over 450 plants in beverage and food sector, plus worked with more than 3500 clients in 90+ countries. His significant language skills have helped develop business overseas, and provide global beverage and multi-language support to FlavorActiV’s customers. Before Boris joined FlavorActiV he gained a PhD in Food Molecular Microbiology from the University of Vienna.

I have a BSc in Chemistry and Soil Science from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and a Postgraduate Diploma (Hons) in Business Administration from the Wits Business School, South Africa. I have over 12 years’ experience as an analytical chemist in the pharmaceutical industries, catalytic convertors industries, nanotoxicology health research, and brewing research. I have been previously employed by SABMiller improve flavour stability (Beer Freshness) measurement with Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in the laboratory, within SABMiller I was a subject matter expert on ESR technology and the beer application. I have visited the CAESR lab in Oxford University to present advancements on the ESR measurement of beer flavour stability. Having joined FlavorActiV in 2017, I have been tasked with delivering the Beer freshness program and maintaining the technical support needed to deliver Beer freshness package effectively to customers globally. I have also been instrumental in the development of the new microESR automated system for measuring free radicals in collaboration with Bruker (leading global manufacture of ESR systems). I presented a poster at the EBC 2019 on the advancements of the new microESR system used to assess beer freshness. Originally from London but have lived and worked all over the UK and in Singapore, I trained as a Forensic Scientist with Degrees in Forensic Science and Psychology. Working at the UK’s Forensic Science Service for 7 years, specialising in the analysis of Drugs of Abuse, later in the location and recovery of latent fingermarks on evidence. My experience led to me moving into product development within the private sector – novel nanoparticle based fingerprint powders and suspensions that could be interrogated by MALDI-TOF analytical systems for contact residues containing drugs and explosive indicators. At FlavorActiV my role is Technical Director – overseeing product development such as our GMP Flavour Standards and TVS software, research, IT systems, product quality and our focus on human / machine. Soft Drink sector - a quietly complex sector, due to the variety of different product and brand types. Fast moving as the market evolves with new and interesting products.

That it's difficult to be a good taster - almost anyone can with some training and awareness be a very good taster. It just need the willingness to learn and a little effort.

What's a common myth or misconception about sensory science you'd love to bust?
Myth: we taste with only our tongue. Truth: Most flavours come from sense of smell. Try eating something holding your nose then letting go, it will have a very different flavour.
What excites you most about your job?
Every day is different. I could be at our office running samples, investigating off notes, co-running sensory panels, doing webinars and customer meetings or on customer sites installing, repairing or training fellow scientists on their new instruments.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation - I'd have my lunch break at a real French bakery every day

What's the most interesting or rewarding challenge you've worked on?
Implementing TVS2 across our customer base was a huge task, but it was a massive improvement in user experience and gave clients much more flexibility in how they conduct and report on the proficiency experience.
What excites you the most about your role at FlavorActiV?
The team I work with are, by far, the best part of the job. We have a diverse mix of people with different specialties, hobbies and interests; watching them grow and develop both at work and personally is a joy.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Superspeed - it would make the job so much easier and make both business and leisure travel less hassle.
What's somethng people might be surprised to learn about you?
I like tinkering with musical instruments - I'm mostly a drummer and guitarist but I'll happily pick up anything that lets me play music.

The Parking Prophet. There would always be one parking space waiting for me, wherever I go. And I park perfectly, first time. When I leave, another driver appears and says, “Wow, great parking, I wish I got that spot"

The flavour Catty. Most people taste it as cat urine, but all I taste is blackcurrants lovely!
What's your favourite smell?
I love the smell of Morocco. Oud, amazing spices, leather, mint, fresh bread, cedarwood.
What's the most interesting place you've ever visited?
Tokyo. It mixes ultra-modern technology, vibrant pop culture, and centuries-old tradition, into one city. Every street, shrine, and cafe feels like a new adventure. Amazing place to visit.

I joined FlavorActiV as a shipping administrator in 2013, and from 2016 to 2022, I had the privilege of leading our customer support team—an experience that taught me a great deal about our incredible products, our global customer base, and what “great service” really means in practice. Working so closely with a diverse and passionate international team motivated me to dive deeper into the people side of the business, reigniting a curiosity in people that had previously been sparked in Reading University where I attained a BSc in Psychology. Building on that previous knowledge with my hands on experience in FlavorActiV, I completed a CIPD Level 5 qualification in Human Resources Management. That learning journey now fuels my work as FlavorActiV’s Director of People, where I get to do what I love most: support, champion, and grow our amazing team. My goal is to make sure every FlavorActiV team member feels heard, supported, and empowered to bring their best—because when we thrive, so do our customers. We're a wonderfully multicultural, endlessly curious bunch, and I’m constantly surprised and inspired by the way we learn from one another (even if every casual drink somehow turns into a sensory profiling session!). What's the most interesting or rewarding challenge you've worked on?
The FlavorActiV team structure is incredibly unique and international. We have internationally based Global Sensory Managers offering local support around the world, who co-ordinate globally with each other and our UK operations teams to provide a consistent and high level customer experience. Our team's commitment to excellence and international co-ordination enables us to hold monthly internal training sessions, where we share industry knowledge and exchange skills and stories to keep us constantly learning and developing both as people, and professionals. This has built a rewarding environment fostering peer-to-peer growth that I have not seen outside of FlavorActiV - and we manage to do all that across 10 time zones!
What's a common myth or misconception about sensory science you'd love to bust?
That drinking beer at 11am is "the easiest job"! Developing your ability to detect off-notes and defects can be challenging and when the off-note is something like Butyric - quite unpleasant!
What excites you the most about your role at FlavorActiV?
Working with our team - we have an incredible array of passionate experts working with FlavorActiV and everyday I am inspired by those around me.
What's a food you could eat everyday and never get bored of?
Anything home baked - I love to try people's creations and I believe you can taste the love and time that's gone it - it makes it even more delicious.

I joined the FlavorActiV team in 2019 as a Global Sensory Manager for EMEA, delivering sensory training across Europe and Africa and supporting global customers in the food and beverage sector. In 2022, I moved into the role of Head of Global Marketing & Strategy, helping shape our product and market strategy while overseeing our global marketing efforts. As of April 2025, I’ve taken on the role of Marketing Director. This new position involves not only leading our global marketing function but also aligning it more closely with our commercial and strategic goals. My focus is on driving brand growth, ensuring consistency in our messaging across regions, and identifying opportunities to grow our presence in both established and emerging food and beverage markets. Coming from a craft beer background, I am a self-confessed beer geek at heart, with a special weakness for fancy coffee. Which Sector do you most enjoy working in, and why?
It’s always a tough call between coffee and beer. Coming from a craft beer background and being a self confessed beer nerd, I naturally have a soft spot for the beer world, and I still have plenty of close friends working across the industry. That said, coffee has been just as exciting to work in over the past few years. Both sectors are incredibly passionate, incredibly technical, and full of people who genuinely care about flavour and quality!
What's the most interesting or rewarding challenge you've worked on?
One of the most rewarding challenges has been planning and delivering major global conferences as an exhibitor. There is a lot happening behind the scenes, from designing the booth and refining the key messages to organising marketing materials, demonstrations, and the overall customer experience at the stand. What makes it satisfying is when all that planning comes together during the event. The stand is busy, conversations are flowing, and you see real opportunities starting from those first interactions. After months of preparation, being face to face with customers and our global team makes it one of the most enjoyable parts of the role.
What excites you most about your role at FlavorActiV?
FlavorActiV has a genuinely global team, and it’s amazing to work with colleagues from different countries, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. Everyone brings different experiences and ideas, which makes the work really interesting and means there’s always something new to learn from each other.
What's the most interesting place you've ever visited?
Iceland. It's one of those places that feels completely different from anywhere else. The landscapes are incredibly dramatic, with volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand beaches all within relatively short distances of each other. It almost feels like being on another planet.

What excites you most about your role at FlavorActiV?
Every day is different, which is something I really enjoy. I love working with people and having the chance to be creative. With such a diverse range of backgrounds, I always learn something nee, especially when collaborating with the global team on projects. It keeps things exciting and never gets old.
What's one flavour that always sparks debate in sensory trainings?
Geosmin is an interesting one, for me it's a strong and easily detectable flavour but many people are anosmic to this flavour.
What's the most interesting plave you've ever visited?
When I was 19, I travelled to Vietnam on my own and made my way to Ha Giang in the far north. I spent 3 days travelling through rural Vietnam on a motorbike. I’ve yet to visit anywhere that matches its beauty and character. Delhi might come a close second, though the two aren’t really comparable. Asia is an incredible continent, so diverse, with each country offering something completely unique, and I know I’ll always enjoy exploring new places across the region.
What's something people might be surprised to learn about you?
My family tree is quite diverse. I have as much Scottish blood in me as I do Indian.

I hold a double degree in Economics and Psychology from The Ohio State University, USA. I started working at FlavorActiV in 2009 and have gone through a series of role change. I worked as a sensory manager, then key account director for 7 years until I moved into my commercial director role in 2018. My days at FlavorActiV keep me very busy in overseeing the divisions of marketing, finance, business support & proficiency management as well as some key account management responsibilities. That said, I am fortunate enough to be supported by a very capable team. In addition to my work at FlavorActiV, I also co-chair a sensory committee at ISBT ( International Society of Beverage Technologists ) as well as their BevTech Europe planning committee. Although I was born in Taiwan, I have spent 2/3 of my life living in the US and the UK. Isovaleric. Cheesy off-note can be foreign to certain geographies. It's better described as "smelly old sneakers" to some.

I've curated a collection of over 3000 pieces of optical instruments incl various vintage cameras and lenses for a private gallery.

Dr Boris Gadzov has been FlavorActiV Director of Global Sensory Management since 2009. Boris began as a Global Sensory Manager, professional trainer and adviser in brand equity, product quality, insight/innovation and taster management. Boris has visited over 450 plants in beverage and food sector, plus worked with more than 3500 clients in 90+ countries. His significant language skills have helped develop business overseas, and provide global beverage and multi-language support to FlavorActiV’s customers. Before Boris joined FlavorActiV he gained a PhD in Food Molecular Microbiology from the University of Vienna.

Born in Liverpool, a Beatles fan who decided to train as a brewer after both my father and grandfather. Hence after graduating in Microbiology, I later qualified as a Master Brewer in a major brewing Company followed by being self employed in a small family business providing equipment to breweries. The experience gained led to developing a number of small and continuing diverse businesses across industry such as Business Centres and Accountancy Practice. My main role however has been to lead FlavorActiV for 20 years where I continue as Chairman of the Board today. This has been an exciting journey developing our customers’ tasting skills in order to assess their brand quality in breweries, beverage plants and now food manufacturers My hobbies are many including real tennis, golf, skiing, motor sport and cooking. Until Covid I travelled almost weekly across the globe to support our regional teams and local customers which provided a great “window on the world”.

Originally from London but have lived and worked all over the UK and in Singapore, I trained as a Forensic Scientist with Degrees in Forensic Science and Psychology. Working at the UK’s Forensic Science Service for 7 years, specialising in the analysis of Drugs of Abuse, later in the location and recovery of latent fingermarks on evidence. My experience led to me moving into product development within the private sector – novel nanoparticle based fingerprint powders and suspensions that could be interrogated by MALDI-TOF analytical systems for contact residues containing drugs and explosive indicators. At FlavorActiV my role is Technical Director – overseeing product development such as our GMP Flavour Standards and TVS software, research, IT systems, product quality and our focus on human / machine. What's the most interesting or rewarding challenge you've worked on?
The ongoing integration of human and instrument sensory. While established for Aroma Analysis and Freshness in many sectors - there's wide opportunity available. Making this an exciting use of technology and human sensory science for product quality control and brand comparison.
Which sector do you most enjoy working in, and why?
Soft Drink sector - a quietly complex sector, due to the variety of different product and brand types. Fast moving as the market evolves with new and interesting products.
What's a common myth or misconception about sensory science you'd love to bust?
That it's difficult to be a good taster - almost anyone can with some training and awareness be a very good taster. It just need the willingness to learn and a little effort.
What's something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I'm a qualified bee kepper.
