WHAT ARE FLAVOUR STANDARDS?

Flavour standards are sensory reference compounds used to replicate specific taste and aroma attributes—both positive and negative—in food and beverage products. They are essential tools for training sensory panellists, improving product quality, detecting off-flavours, and achieving consistency in production.

Our GMP Flavour Standards are sold by flavour. Each flavour standard is encapsulated in pharmaceutical-grade, blister-sealed capsules, ensuring stability and a long shelf life. These standards are safe to smell and taste and require no specialised equipment.

Why we use blister packaging (and never pots)

Blister packaging protects capsules from the environment until they are ready for use. It greatly reduces the amount of headspace for possible flavour escape. As each capsule is individually blister-packaged, making use of one capsule still leaves all others protected.

Pots are semi-porous, allowing molecules to pass through and flavour to be lost. Their significant headspace also contributes to substantial flavour escape as a gas. Even when using just one capsule, all those remaining in the pot are exposed.

Our UK GMP Flavour Centre

FlavorActiV’s GMP Flavour Centre is the world’s only pharmaceutically run facility dedicated to producing flavour reference standards. The Flavour Centre is a state-of-the-art facility located near Liverpool, UK.

The Flavour Centre was designed by FlavorActiV from the ground up at the direct request of global customers, who wanted to move away from inferior food-grade ‘certified flavour standards’ to GMP-compliant pharmaceutical standards. This standard ensures the production of safe, stable, traceable, consistent, and long-shelf-life products.

All FlavorActiV’s industry-leading encapsulated Flavour Standards are manufactured following GMP at our Flavour Centre. All aspects of manufacture are overseen by Quay Pharma, audited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). We also welcome customer audits.
