Hannah Milnes
Flavour Forensics Scientist
I joined FlavorActiV having moved from Leicester where I completed my Forensic Science degree and where I am currently working towards my PhD in the treatment of olive oil mill wastewater from Jordan. Having worked with oils during this project, my interest in food and drinks analysis and research grew which lead me to my role here at FlavorActiV. Away from the lab, you’ll find me in a rowing boat on the river somewhere training for races to compete up and down the country with a snack... its usually chocolate that's never too far away!

What's your favourite sector?
Analytical/Technical in food. It's like being a detective but for food
What's a common myth or misconception about sensory science you'd love to bust?
Myth: we taste with only our tongue. Truth: Most flavours come from sense of smell. Try eating something holding your nose then letting go, it will have a very different flavour.
What excites you most about your job?
Every day is different. I could be at our office running samples, investigating off notes, co-running sensory panels, doing webinars and customer meetings or on customer sites installing, repairing or training fellow scientists on their new instruments.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation - I'd have my lunch break at a real French bakery every day
