The CO2 Sensory Essential Kit is a professional sensory training tool designed to help tasters identify both off-notes and positive notes in food and beverage-grade carbon dioxide (CO₂). This kit is essential for ensuring the highest quality standards in products where CO₂ plays a critical role, such as carbonated beverages and other food applications.
With 40 sensory-flavour standard capsules, the kit covers 8 commonly encountered CO₂ off-notes, providing a comprehensive solution for quality control.

A CO2 Sensory Essential Kit is a standardised collection of 40 encapsulated flavour standards specifically curated for the gas and beverage industries. It allows quality control teams to “spike” samples with precise concentrations of common contaminants, ensuring tasters can reliably detect impurities that may arise during CO2 recovery, purification, or transport.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE CO2 SENSORY ESSENTIAL KIT?
The CO2 Sensory Essential Kit includes 40 sensory flavour standard capsules, specifically designed to identify off-notes that may affect the quality of CO₂ in food and beverage production. Each kit contains:
Off-Note
Description
Acetaldehyde
Sharp, green apple-like off-note
Motor Fuel
Diesel or gasoline-like chemical flavour
Ethyl Acetate
Fruity, solvent-like flavour commonly associated with acetate
Fermented
Mouldy, yeasty off-flavour often related to bacterial contamination
Nonanal
Fatty, waxy off-flavour with an oily noter
DMS (Dimethyl Sulfide)
Cabbage-like, sulfurous off-note
H₂S (Hydrogen Sulfide)
Pungent, rotten egg-like off-flavour
Fish Oil
Fishy, oily off-note often resulting from contamination during production
Each of these off-notes can significantly impact the sensory quality of CO₂ in beverages and food products. By training with this kit, you can ensure that your CO₂ meets the highest safety and quality standards.
WHY USE THE CO2 SENSORY ESSENTIAL KIT?
The CO2 Sensory Essential Kit is vital in food and beverage production:
– Identify CO₂-related Off-Notes: Train sensory panels to detect common off-notes and ensure CO₂ quality in beverages and other products. – Ensure Product Safety: Identify contamination early to prevent it from impacting product flavour or consumer safety. – Maintain Consistency: Regularly evaluate CO₂ supplier quality across batches to improve product reliability.
HOW DOES THE CO2 SENSORY ESSENTIAL KIT WORK?
To use the Sensory Essential kit:
1. Train Your Sensory Panel: Use provided capsules; panel members evaluate CO₂ quality and detect potential off-notes in food and beverage production. 2. Calibrate Your Team: Ensure consistent identification of off-notes; improve quality control of CO₂ use. 3. Ensure High Standards: Regular kit use maintains top-tier CO₂ quality standards; reduces off-flavour risk
WHO SHOULD USE THE CO2 SENSORY ESSENTIAL KIT?
The CO2 Sensory Essential Kit is ideal for:
– Food and Beverage Manufacturers: Ensure the quality of CO₂ used in your carbonated products, from soft drinks to alcoholic beverages. – Quality Control Teams: Regularly test and calibrate your sensory panels to detect CO₂ off-notes and maintain product consistency. – Production and R&D Teams: Help develop new products or improve existing ones by maintaining optimal CO₂ quality in the production process. – Sensory Specialists: Enhance your sensory training programs to better identify CO₂-related sensory issues and ensure accurate test results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why are there 5 replicates of each off-note? The 5 replicates allow for repeated training sessions, panel calibration exercises, and proficiency testing. This ensures panels can consistently detect each contaminant across multiple evaluation rounds.
Can this kit detect CO₂ contamination from recovery systems? Yes. The kit specifically includes Motor Fuel, DMS, and H2S standards—common contaminants from CO₂ recovery systems in brewing and industrial processes. Training with these standards enables early detection of recovery system failures.
FlavorActiV GMP Flavour Standards
Only Pharmaceutical Quality GMP Flavour Standards provide sufficient quality for professional sensory panels to train and validate with.
We produce encapsulated GMP (Pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practice) Flavour Standards that are safe to both smell and drink. The compounds within our capsules impart the aroma, taste and mouthfeel of a specific defect or positive flavour into a beverage for the purposes of taster training, calibration and quality control.
Our individual flavour GMP Flavour Standards are sold by flavour, each flavour pack contains 5 capsules, each separately blister packaged. Our sensory kits contain a mixture of flavours, each separately blister packaged, read the product description for flavour details.
We ship globally, and have over 20 years of experience at it. Our GMP Pharmaceutical Flavour Standards are produced to the highest standards, and as such, their shelf-life is strong and their quality consistent.
FlavorActiV’s flavour centre is the world’s only pharmaceutically run facility dedicated to the production of flavour reference standards. The Flavour Centre is a state-of-the-art facility housed within the campus of world-renowned Quay Pharma near Liverpool in the U.K.
The Flavour Centre was designed by FlavorActiV from the ground up at the direct request of global customers as they looked to move away from inferior food grade ‘certified flavour standards’ to GMP Pharma, a standard that ensures safe, stable, traceable, consistent and long shelf-life products.
All FlavorActiV’s industry-leading encapsulated flavour standards are manufactured following GMP at our Flavour Centre. All aspects of manufacture are overseen by Quay Pharma who are audited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory agency (MHRA). We also welcome customer audits.
Only FlavorActiV GMP flavour standard capsules bear our mark of authenticity.
We brand each of our capsules so that our customers know they’re getting the Pharmaceutical GMP Quality that only FlavorActiV provide.
Industry leading packaging and shelf-life
FlavorActiV flavour standards are blister packaged, which extends shelf-life and protects capsules from potential contamination. The average shelf-life of FlavorActiV flavour standards is 18 months to 4 years, depending on the flavour compounds.
We will never ship in pots or plastic packaging, here’s why…
Blister packaging protects capsules from the environment until they are ready for use. Blister packaging greatly reduces the amount of headspace for possible flavour escape. As each capsule individually blister packaged, making use of one capsule still leaves all others protected. FlavorActiV Flavour Standard packaging is 100% recyclable, as opposed to polypropylene which is not widely recycled.
Pots are semi-porous, they allow molecules to pass through and flavour to be lost, their significant headspace also adds to substantial flavour escape as a gas, even when using just one capsule all those remaining in the pot are exposed.
