The Bromophenol Flavour Standard is designed to train professional tasters to recognise and measure the intensity of bromophenol’s presence in beverages.
Bromophenol is a brominated phenol compound known for imparting unpleasant, synthetic flavours to beverages such as beer, water, and soft drinks. These undesirable flavours can result from external contamination through packaging materials or the environment. The flavour threshold for bromophenol in beverages typically ranges from 70 to 230 ng/L, depending on the type of beverage and exposure conditions.
With FlavorActiV’s Bromophenol Flavour Standard, you can train your tasting panel to detect bromophenol and other off-flavours confidently—an essential practice for maintaining the highest standards of beverage quality.

Bromophenol flavour refers to a group of brominated phenol compounds that create sharp, unpleasant, and chemical-like taints in beverages. These compounds are not naturally desirable—they are considered off-flavours that can compromise the taste, aroma, and overall quality of drinks such as:
– Beer
– Bottled water
– Soft drinks
The flavour threshold for bromophenol typically ranges from 70 to 230 ng/L, depending on the beverage type and storage conditions. Even at very low concentrations, it can be detected by trained tasters.
Bromophenol flavour taints are caused by contamination from brominated compounds. These compounds can leach into beverages during production, packaging, or storage. Common sources include:
– Fire-retardant-treated materials such as paint, wood, or paper.
– Recycled cardboard packaging, which may contain brominated compounds.
– Contaminated plastic packaging or storage environments.
These sources introduce chemical taints that can compromise the sensory quality of beverages. Identifying and addressing these contamination points is vital for ensuring product integrity.
The Bromophenol Flavour Standard is a professional training tool that helps beverage companies:
– Train sensory panels to confidently detect bromophenol and related off-flavours
– Standardise quality assurance processes across production lines
– Identify packaging-related taints early, before products reach consumers
With FlavorActiV’s GMP Flavour Standards, including the Bromophenol GMP Flavour Standard, you ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with global quality guidelines.
Trained tasters often describe bromophenol flavour with the following sensory references:
– Inky
– Electric fire / burnt electronics
– Old TV set / electrical equipment
– Museum-like
– Heavy chemical / medicinal
– Brominated phenols
These descriptors help panels communicate and log taint detection with precision.
The bromophenol flavour standard is used by:
– Breweries & soft drink manufacturers – to monitor packaging and storage quality
– Water treatment and bottling companies – to ensure taint-free drinking water
– Sensory scientists and quality assurance teams – for training, benchmarking, and calibration
– Research & development labs – to study off-flavours and improve packaging choices
By including bromophenol in your flavour library, your team can respond faster to contamination risks and maintain consumer trust.
Beer Flavour Wheel Number: within the 0500 range (no specific number).
Flavour levels: This flavour can occur at many different levels.
Our Bromophenol flavour standard is one of many different brominated phenols that can occur. It is intended as a general representation of the flavour of these taints. In addition, we have other brominated phenols in our flavour standard range, which are available upon request.
This Bromophenol Flavour Standard is essential for beverage producers, quality assurance teams, and sensory professionals looking to sharpen their off-flavour recognition capabilities. By incorporating this training tool, you can ensure faster identification of packaging-related taints and uphold beverage quality across your production lines.
FlavorActiV GMP Flavour Standards
Only Pharmaceutical Quality GMP Flavour Standards provide sufficient quality for professional sensory panels to train and validate with.
We produce encapsulated GMP (Pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practice) Flavour Standards that are safe to both smell and drink. The compounds within our capsules impart the aroma, taste and mouthfeel of a specific defect or positive flavour into a beverage for the purposes of taster training, calibration and quality control.
Our individual flavour GMP Flavour Standards are sold by flavour, each flavour pack contains 5 capsules, each separately blister packaged. Our sensory kits contain a mixture of flavours, each separately blister packaged, read the product description for flavour details.
We ship globally, and have over 20 years of experience at it. Our GMP Pharmaceutical Flavour Standards are produced to the highest standards, and as such, their shelf-life is strong and their quality consistent.
FlavorActiV’s flavour centre is the world’s only pharmaceutically run facility dedicated to the production of flavour reference standards. The Flavour Centre is a state-of-the-art facility housed within the campus of world-renowned Quay Pharma near Liverpool in the U.K.
The Flavour Centre was designed by FlavorActiV from the ground up at the direct request of global customers as they looked to move away from inferior food grade ‘certified flavour standards’ to GMP Pharma, a standard that ensures safe, stable, traceable, consistent and long shelf-life products.
All FlavorActiV’s industry-leading encapsulated flavour standards are manufactured following GMP at our Flavour Centre. All aspects of manufacture are overseen by Quay Pharma who are audited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory agency (MHRA). We also welcome customer audits.
Only FlavorActiV GMP flavour standard capsules bear our mark of authenticity.
We brand each of our capsules so that our customers know they’re getting the Pharmaceutical GMP Quality that only FlavorActiV provide.
Industry leading packaging and shelf-life
FlavorActiV flavour standards are blister packaged, which extends shelf-life and protects capsules from potential contamination. The average shelf-life of FlavorActiV flavour standards is 18 months to 4 years, depending on the flavour compounds.
We will never ship in pots or plastic packaging, here’s why…
Blister packaging protects capsules from the environment until they are ready for use. Blister packaging greatly reduces the amount of headspace for possible flavour escape. As each capsule individually blister packaged, making use of one capsule still leaves all others protected. FlavorActiV Flavour Standard packaging is 100% recyclable, as opposed to polypropylene which is not widely recycled.
Pots are semi-porous, they allow molecules to pass through and flavour to be lost, their significant headspace also adds to substantial flavour escape as a gas, even when using just one capsule all those remaining in the pot are exposed.
