Spirit Flavour Standards
We’ve revolutionised the way people use flavour standards
Innovative capsule based Spirit Flavour Standards allow your tasters to become experts in identifying problems during and after production and distilling, reducing the risk that a poor quality product will reach the market.
Advanced technology has been able to capture specific, authentic flavour molecules without impurities into an encapsulated powder form in a set concentration.
Each Flavour Standard represents a positive or negative aspect that can occur in spirits. You can find the full range in our product information section.
Spirit Flavour Standards are food grade products, as such they pose no health considerations. They can be consumed and disposed of with no special requirements as the capsules are biodegradable.

Quick, Convenient and Effective
Each flavour standard comes in a pre-set concentration within a capsule. All you need to do is to simply pour the contents into a volume of spirit and water. There’s now no need to spend time producing chemicals in a sensory lab or to measure them out in a liquid form.
Using Flavour Standards to train your tasters is an effortless way to improve brand quality and sensory systems, as well as being efficient and cost effective.
We recommend the use of managed taster schemes in combination with Flavour Standards to effectively train your tasters. We can also develop specific training programmes to meet your needs and our Taster Management Advisers are available to visit sites to provide specific training to your tasters.
By using Flavour Standards and taster training methods you can turn an ordinary person into an expert taster within a few short weeks. This normally took years costing distilleries significant amounts of time and money.
Flavour standards are provided in sealed pots. Simply open the resealable pot remove the protective foam packaging inside and take out the flavour capsule. Replace the foam and reseal the pot, hold the capsule up on one end and lightly tap it with your fingernail to settle the contents.
You can then open the capsule by holding each end and twisting and pulling at the same time. Pour into 100ml of water for three times the flavour threshold. Gently swirl or stir the water to mix in the flavour standard, wait five minutes and add 100ml of spirits and swirl.
The empty capsule can be thrown into standard waste receptacles and any excess drink after tasting can be normally disposed of.
Spirit Flavour Standard Kit provides all the instructions to use the Flavour Standards correctly. You can order our Spirit Flavour Standard Kit here.
Storage
Flavour standards might be robust enough to withstand a flight inside luggage or even the toughest off road drive; but even extremes can have an effect on them. Our flavour standards are best stored under these conditions.
- Keep them in the dark
- Keep them dry – even though we provide a desiccant in the pots high humidity and water can still degrade the flavour standards
- Keep them cool, but not too cool – we recommend 25 degrees Celsius, please keep our standards out of the fridge the cold can make the capsules brittle.
- Check the expiry date – our capsules have a shelf life, past that time and it may effect the flavour that your tasters are being trained or validated on. Use our online order form to get hold of some replacements or call us. We’ll be happy to help!
